REVIEW: Splinters Of You by Anne Malcom
Words are my weapon.
Stories wrap around my soul, choking me, capturing you.
I don't work in dreams.
I don't offer escapes.
I cage you within my nightmares.
Magnolia Grace is a horror writer, despite what the name might suggest.
One of the best in the business, if you asked around.
Pressure comes with that title. Expectation for the next nightmare. The next bestseller.
That's what it is.
She can't be healthy. Because that means she won't write.
And she hasn't been writing.
A looming deadline and a crumbling psyche drive her into the woods. To a cabin which was the site of a grizzly murder.
A serial killer, butchering women, toying with her.
Her plan is to borrow some of the horror that seeped into the soil.
But hers follows her.
The woods are meant to be her escape. But they are almost her demise.
He was an unlikely saviour. An unlikely muse. He has horrors of his own. A motorcycle club looking to settle a score. A soul too broken to offer her anything but pain.

Splinters Of You was a beautiful canvas of self depravity that was so flawlessy written.
I'm always searching for a certain type of book, the ones that consume you, change you, give you goosebumps and have your heart pounding. I LOVE and CRAVE the suspense, the trepidation, the angst. The books that keep you awake in the middle of the night and give you that ice cold chill down the back of your neck. And this book? IT HAD EVERYTHING.
Splinters Of You is my first Anne Malcom book and it will not be my last. Written in a single POV as Magnolia Grace. A best selling Horror Writer with a deadline, in the midst of writers block going in search of inspiration at a cabin that was the site of a grizzly murder.
Magnolia Grace is like no character I've ever read before, she's honest and she's broken. She's damaged and flawed and probably the most relatable character I've ever encountered. Magnolia uses her flaws and her trauma as a personal muse for her writing but even that's failing with her latest book.
Splinters Of You was like nothing I have ever read before, so intelligently and captivatingly written. I was consumed with Magnolia's character development, her internal dialogue, her self diagnosis and self medication. I was addicted to finding answers to the questions I had. Magnolia's thought process as an author within the book was so fascinating and made me wonder what actually goes through a creative person's mind and what they use of themselves to inspire there art and how much there art consumes them.
Something that also drew me in was the characters thoughts on femininity and how it truly felt to be a woman. How judged and second guessed we are as women.
And while Splinters Of You is published as a Romance book, and did have this aspect, it wasn't at the forefront of the underlying suspenseful plot but was much more character driven rather then plot driven which worked fantastically with these characters. The characters drew you into there world so completely that all you wanted was to know what they would say, think or do next. The character development within this book is what makes the book so captivating to read. Each secondary character had there story, they were flawed, they had secrets and they were all equally fascinating.
Anne Malcom is a phenomenal writer and I applaud her for writing such a refreshingly honest book that broke down barriers and made you think. She captured the essence of a troubled woman suffering in her own darkness so perfectly. I felt what Magnolia felt, I related to her and understood every decision she made and why. Never have I been so sucked into such a depraved mind as I was with Magnolia's and come out better for it. Splinters Of You changed me in the most delicious way.
