REVIEW: Need For Speed by Brooke Blaine & Ella Frank

April 4, 2020

In the heat of the hot California sun, tempers flare and desires ignite as Solo and Panther try to resist their attraction while fighting to be number one.

MATEO MORGAN

CALL SIGN: SOLO

Reckless, arrogant, and bold, Solo is as known in the U.S. Navy for his bad-boy reputation as he is for his skills as a fighter pilot. It’s a surprise to his peers, then, when he’s chosen to train and compete at the most prestigious naval aviation academy in the world.

MISSION RULES:

1. Kick everyone’s ass.

2. Do whatever it takes to win.

3. Do your best to distract the competition.

4. Especially when that competition is a gorgeous blue-eyed perfectionist who makes your blood run hot.

GRANT HUGHES

CALL SIGN: PANTHER

Disciplined, smart, and confident, Panther can’t afford not to play by the rules. As the son of a top Navy commander, all eyes are on him, and being anything less than number one is unacceptable.

MISSION RULES:

1. Keep it safe in the air.

2. Prove you’re more than Commander Hughes’s son.

3. No distractions. Stay focused.

4. Don’t fall for your competition—especially not the rebellious heartbreaker with lips made for sinning.

Need for Speed is the second book in the Elite Series centred around Mateo Morgan AKA Solo and Grant Hughes AKA Panther.

We met Matteo and Grant in Danger Zone and learnt all about the world they lived in. Danger Zone was very much an introduction book to the characters involved in the story and setting the scene. Need For Speed was more about the relationship that was developing between Matteo and Grant.

Their relationship has developed to a point where they’ve moved past the friends with benefits stage but aren’t sure how to convey that they both want the next step with each other. Neither of them really understands what the next step is. Need For Speed like Danger Zone, had sexual chemistry in spades between these two characters.

Danger Zone left us on one heck of a cliff hanger with no idea what had happened to Grant, was he alive? Hurt? Was it his fault? Luckily, we got the answers within the first few chapters of Need For Speed. I loved that it was Matteo that ended up looking after Grant but I would’ve loved if this part of the story was fleshed out and lengthened so we could read more about the tension between these two and understand more about how the crashed affected both of the characters. Grant recovered from his injuries incredibly quickly and was back in the gym within a week and both characters seemed to move past the crash really quickly as well. Considering how torn up Matteo was and how Grant’s anxiety got the better of him I thought this could have been more of a focal point in the plot.

And although book 2 was called Need for Speed, I totally missed the speed part. While I enjoyed Danger Zone I didn’t enjoy Need for Speed as much, I found it slow going. The relationship development between Matteo and Grant moved at a quick pace but I felt like the plot moved much too slowly. There didn’t seem like there was a plot in this book at all and I really missed reading about flying.

I think Need For Speed needed a bit more angst between all of the characters, more specifically Grant, Matteo and Grant’s Father.

One thing I do love about this series are the side characters, we’ve met them all and learned little bits and pieces of info about each character and what there call signs mean but I hope that in the final book in The Elite Series, Classified, that we learn more about these side characters. Specifically, Whiplash! I love that there’s a female pilot and I hope there’s a freaken awesome story to tell about her!
