REVIEW: The Rise Of Monsters by Brianna Jean

January 23, 2020

“What do you do when the world hardens you? When looking in the mirror becomes too painful and using your fists to let the anger breathe isn’t enough anymore?  You either drown and die in your own bullshit or you fight to survive.”

Annalise. Lanier. Cabe. Quint.

One fought underground to make money in the slums of New York City. One lived with crippling guilt, swimming in self-hatred. Another fell in love with a ghost, losing himself to his dedication, while the last spent centuries alone, fighting for control of his own mind.

Unforeseen circumstances bring the four of them together, sparking to life an unwanted bond, igniting new and foreign power in their veins, and bringing forth more questions than answers.
Thrown into a game they don’t want to play, they’ll have to rely on each other to find the truth.

Angels. Demons. A war for Human territory.

From the ashes of their pasts, monsters will rise.

The Rise of Monsters was nothing like I expected it to be! Raw, slightly chilling, magnetizing and so damn intriguing.

The Prologue of The Rise of Monsters set the scene for what was a fast paced, passionate, angsty Urban Fantasy read that had me vibrating with anticipation for what was coming next!

The Rise of Monsters centers around 4 main characters and is written through each of there Points of View.

Annalise, is the female protagonist and an absolute firecracker. She’s tough as nails, ruthless, wild and full of varying levels of snark. But she’s also damaged. I found Annalise to be intense and for me personally a little too much at times. Her character pushed on your comfort zone with her intensity. She was FULL ON.

“She was a wicked creature, a perfect tornado, an emotionally charged full moon.

And she completely owned me.”

Lanier is angry, angry at his past, angry at the prospects for his future and the Alpha of the 3 male protagonists and all decisions are made through him. Cabe and Quint won’t make a move without Lanier’s say so.

Cabe is the balance for everyone. He’s calm, rational and passionate. He knows what he wants from life and he’ll do what he has too, to have it. Even if it means chasing the girl in his visions to the ends of the earth.

Quint is damaged, lonely and lost. He’s nothing like his father and has no interest in being so. Where is his place in this world? Where is his place in this group of 4? How can he be so like his brothers and then in other ways so different?

These characters are some of the most complex I’ve ever read. With difficult upbringings and complex pasts that effect every decision they make within there current lives, what type of future could they possibly have together or even apart?

The character development was written so well considering how complex each character was and also the fact that this is the author's debut novel. The pace of the development flowed perfectly with the pace of the unique plot. The Rise of Monsters keeps you guessing right up until the last page and then leaves you guessing with one hell of a cliff hanger. This book was full of angst, banter, and SO MUCH sexual tension and chemistry between the 4 main protagonists. The jealousy, drama and suspense keeps your attention from the first few pages and has you hanging on every word!

“We could burn the world down as long as we did it together.”

About the Author: Brianna Jean

Brianna Jean is a book loving, donut eating, vodka drinking, kind of human. Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, she thinks pizza and chicken wings are a food group and the Buffalo Bills are a way of life (even if they lose).

She has a daughter named Harley, two fur babies, and an incredibly supportive other half. She writes modern dark romance, set in both fantasy and contemporary worlds, and lives everyday with characters wrecking havoc in her brain. Writing is her passion, books are her favorite pastime, and music soothes her soul.

Loud, sassy, and a little embarrassing, Brianna lives to love herself and those around her. Being an author was the dream, and now that dream is coming true—one book at a time.
