After Bombshell. My mind is blown. I had no idea what direction this story would take after the cliff hanger ending of The Prince but whatever direction I thought it was going in, it didn’t.
The Prince had a climactic ending where we learned that Caden had ascended from just the Prince to the King of the Summer Fey. This occurred during a fight while Caden was trying to save Brighton from the clutches of other Fey when he drew the flaming sword. A fight when true loyalties came to light. And a moment later was when Caden’s ‘true’ feelings were delivered in a callous way towards Brighton.
The King picks up almost a month after the events of The Prince, Brighton is still heart broken and in shock. And she’s still searching for Aric, the ancient that brutally murdered her mother and tried to murder her no matter the warning’s that Caden delivers.
Caden is still King, and still trying to prevent Brighton from hunting down Aric. The way he goes about trying to prevent this causes huge problems for Brighton that put pressure on her friendship with Ivy and Ren.
Ivy and Ren returned to New Orleans near the end of The Prince and make appearances in The King as well. Just like Caden, and the majority of, the Order and Fey at Hotel Good Fey, they have no faith in Brighton’s abilities to hunt or to protect herself. The only person, bar herself who seems to believe in Brighton’s abilities is Tink.
The King was a fantastic and yet hard read. There was a lot of Plot development in terms of what happens next while the character development was a bit slower. Brighton finds herself in a very traumatic situation that takes up the majority of the book, If you understand what happened to Brighton’s mother when she patrolled for the Order herself, you’ll understand thy this situation is so heart breaking to read at times.
One of the things I love about reading a JLA book are the heroines. No matter what book or series you pick up of JLA’s, every heroine is filled with such strength. Her heroines go through some very traumatic events, but they never break, they think they do and sometimes they even come close, but their inner strength gets them through every situation. And the way these situations and reactions to it are written are always so real, there’s no fake emotion within her writing. The character development of every character is always flawless, real and deep. I truly loved reading not only the development of Brighton but the development of Caden.
I’ve been a JLA Fangirl since I first read Obsidian back in 2014 and have truly loved watching her writing evolve as her characters do. Every book makes me fall more in love with her writing no matter how long or short they are.
The King was a truly magnetic read, I couldn’t put it down from the minute I started it. I always liked Brighton as a character and was fascinated by Caden in the first 3 books of the series so reading about these 2 characters in these novella’s is something special. My only complaint about The King is that I read it in one sitting, I didn’t saviour it and enjoy it slowly. I absolutely devoured it.
I waited a year for the The King to release and the anticipation nearly killed me but gosh the wait was worth it!
Start the Wicked Trilogy here!
Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans. Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart. Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her. But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

Not like anyone can blame her. After all, being held captive by a psychotic fae prince hell-bent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld is bound to leave some mental scars. It’s more than that, though. Something dark and insidious is spreading throughout Ivy, more powerful than she could ever imagine... and it’s coming between her and the man she’s fallen deeply in love with, elite Order member Ren Owens. Ren would do anything to keep Ivy safe. Anything. But when he makes a life altering choice for her, the fallout of his act has far reaching consequences that threaten to tear their lives apart. If Ivy is going to have any hope of surviving this, she must put aside the hurt and betrayal she feels, and work with not only those she loves, but with an enemy she would rather kill than ever trust. War is coming, and it soon becomes clear that what Ivy and Ren thought they knew about the Order, themselves, and even their enemies, has been nothing but a cluster of dangerous, deadly lies. Ivy knows she must be more than just brave to save those she loves--and, ultimately, to save herself. Because behind every evil fae Prince, there’s a Queen….
