REVIEW & EXCERPT: The Birthday List by Devney Perry

Happily married to her college sweetheart, Poppy lived a blessed life with the husband of her dreams.

Then everything changed. She is no longer a wife. She is no longer the envy of her single friends. Now, people look at her with pity as they whisper a single word behind her back.

Years after her husband’s tragic death, years of pain and sorrow and wishing for the life she’ll never get back, Poppy decides to finish Jamie’s birthday list. She’ll do the things he wanted to most. Because maybe, just maybe, if she can complete his list, she can start to live again.

Poppy expects going through the birthday list will be hard. She expects it to hurt. But what she doesn’t expect is Cole. Could the man who delivered the news of her husband’s death and shattered her heart be the one to help her put it back together again?

Turning to the door, I smiled, ready to greet my late-evening customer, but faltered as the door closed behind him.

Cole Goodman was walking my way.

My belly dipped as I took him in. His aviator sunglasses were perched on top of his chocolate-brown hair. A black polo stretched across his broad shoulders and pulled tight across his muscled arms. His pale-blue jeans molded to his Herculean thighs before draping down to his black, square-toed boots. The leather belt on Cole’s trim waist held both a shining badge and a holstered gun.

Cole smiled and locked his light-green eyes on mine as he crossed the room.

His straight, white teeth made my breath hitch—something that had happened last night more times than I wanted to admit.

Molly, who had turned around from her seat to greet our customer, spun around so her back was to Cole. Her cheeks flushed as she whispered, “Wow.”

Wow was right.

Cole Goodman was—simply put—gorgeous.

He could give a woman a speeding ticket and get a thank-you in return. He inspired women to attempt push-ups in a karate class just for the chance to watch him sweat through his gi. Cole made grown women blush like teenagers and giggle in corners, like those girls at the dojo last night.

Determined not to show fear to whoever came my way, I forced the corners of my mouth up. They fell when a man stepped into the waiting area. A man I hadn’t seen in five years, one month and three days appeared in the room. The cop who’d told me my husband had been murdered.

The Birthday List follows Poppy as she completes her late husbands Birthday List over the course of a year. It's Poppy and Coles quest for love and healing that makes this story so special. There are moments in this beautiful story that are heart breaking, others that are heart warming, but every single moment of this incredible story evokes so many emotions in you.

Poppy looses her husband after only a short time of marriage and feels like she will never recover. After years of dark despair she starts to find the light and herself again. Completing Jamie's Birthday List is the first step to her new future.

Cole was the perfect Hero for Poppy. He knew all the right things to say and do and was so incredibly swoony! He balanced her out, he challenged her and supported her more than anyone else in her life and most importantly he believed in her ability to heal and to start living her life again.

“Poppy Maysen, I think you’ve figured me out.” My heart thumped a bit harder. “Not quite.” “Give it time.” I’d try. Minute by minute.

Devney Perry has an eloquent and mature way of writing what was a truly emotive and perfect second chance romance. Second Chance Romance's are my favourite and I gravitate towards them. The Birthday List is one of my absolute favourites and was different due to Poppy finding her second chance with another man.

I tend to avoid books that I know will make me cry so I put off reading The Birthday List until the very last moment and I regret it immensely. The Birthday List made me cry but not in the way I thought it would. It was so heartfelt and written in such a respectful way that they were tears of joy and happiness. There was the right level of angst that had me pausing at certain moments to take a breath before I continued and perfect moments of hilarity that had me giggling at certain characters actions. (I'm looking at you Jimmy and Randall!)

The Birthday List will keep you on the edge of your seat, it's full of so many incredible moments and I absolutely loved reading Devney Perry's words.

I'm still in shock that she has only been publishing her work since last year. She writes like someone who's been publishing for years! I cannot recommend her books enough! There aren't enough words to explain how much I need you all to read her books!

I've just gone and 1clicked every single one of her books and checked the shipping prices to get signed copies of everything! That's how much I loved her writing! I can't wait to read the Jamison Valley Series and Tattered that's releasing in June this year!

And in that moment, I opened myself up completely to Cole. Without words, I told him how much he meant to me. How he’d stitched my broken pieces back together. And in his tender gaze—deep in his pale-green irises—he showed me a vulnerability I’d never seen. His eyes pleaded for me to take care of his heart. I’d protect it always.
