REVIEW: Rebel by Rebecca Yarros

October 2, 2017

She'll defy his every expectation.

She’s Penna Carstairs.
The Renegade they call Rebel.
FMX-treme Magazine’s sexiest female athlete of the year.
There’s no rule in extreme sports she hasn’t broken,
No gender barrier she hasn’t demolished.

She’s the woman I met in a bar in Vegas.
The woman I illegally BASE jumped for.
The woman I spent one insane, incredible night with.
But now I’m screwed.
Or rather…not screwed.

Because the woman I can’t get out of my head is the one woman I can never touch again.
I’m Dr. Cruz Delgado—the youngest professor on this campus,
And Penelope Carstairs just walked into my class.

"This was dangerous. We both knew it, and yet here we were again. Magnets. Gravity. Chemical reactions. Whatever."

Sometimes the most incredible books are the hardest reviews to write.

Sometimes a book effects you so much that you simply cannot put into words what it meant to you.

Rebel is one of those books.

It was exquisite, emotional and heart wrenching. Every word Rebecca Yarros writes feels like a gateway to my heart and soul.

I fell in love with Penna aka Rebel aka Penelope from the first moment she appeared in Wilder. She's the type of girl that shatters stereotypes and expectations put on her, the type of girl who inspires and the type of girl that every girl should want to be when she grows up.

I'm actually really disappointed that Penna isn't real cause I'm pretty sure we'd be best friends!

“I could tell you all day how beautiful you are, how absolutely fucking exquisite, but words would never compare to seeing you like this.”

Rebel blew my expectations out the window of how incredible it was going to be. The writing was emotive. The plot was phenomenal and suspenseful. The characters were incredible and inspiring. The setting was stunning. Rebel the character and Rebel the book were flawless. While Wilder still holds the coveted number 1 spot in my heart, Rebel is a very close second.

One of the most incredible parts of Rebel was the character development. I love an angsty story with angsty characters who develop as the story does. Rebecca Yarros writes complex characters full of pain and angst and always manages to develop them in perfect time with the development of the story. Rebel started with a very broken Penelope Carstairs who felt like she could no longer identify with who the world thought she was. But the very first chapter of Rebel gives you so much insight into how complex her character is.

“God, I love this feeling,” she whispered, as if she hadn’t meant to say the thought aloud. “The rush?” I guessed. “The anticipation. The war that silently rages in my body between what I want it to do and what it knows isn’t safe. The way my stomach tightens and my heart starts to race. The moment the decision is still mine.”

Rebel is my favourite type of story, one that pulls at the heart strings and makes you FEEL. Inspires you, pushes your boundaries and makes you feel like a better person just for having read each word.

"...with Penelope I’d been a moth drawn to the flame she was—wild, beautiful, and hypnotically irresistible."

I highly recommend Rebel to loves of Angsty Sports Romances. But I would suggest reading Wilder and Nova before reading Rebel!

Meet the Author: Rebecca Yarros

I’m a hopeless romantic and adore all things chocolate, coffee and paleo. No, seriously, I need to have a caffeine IV put in. I’ve adored reading all my life, and writing naturally evolved from my love of romance.

I’m also a military wife. During my husband’s deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, I was devouring a romance novel a day, and during his third deployment, I finally wrote my own. With a somewhat ironic timing, I received my book deal for Full Measures during his fourth deployment, and published a month after he returned home.

On the homefront, we have six kids. Yes, you read that right—six. If I’m not writing or playing guitar, I’m usually tying hockey skates for our four boys, or sneaking in John Hughes marathons with my two daughters. We recently adopted our youngest daughter from the foster system and we’re passionate about helping others do the same!
