REVIEW: Kiss My Boots by Harper Sloan

July 18, 2017

Quinn Davis might finally have a shot at her own happily-ever-after—but will she let love in, or will she tell it to go ahead and kiss her boots?

Quinn Davis prefers to live her life quietly. She’s the stereotypical tomboy with two overprotective big brothers who have always been there to protect her, especially from devilishly handsome cowboys with silver tongues. That is, until Tate Montgomery comes riding into town. Their first meeting, however, is far from something out of a fairy tale and only further convinces Quinn that men aren’t worth her time.

The only place Tate Montgomery ever truly felt at home growing up was during the long, sweltering summer months he spent at his Gram and Paw’s farm in Pine Oak, Texas. Now, Tate has returned to his childhood sanctuary seeking a fresh start—but if he’s being entirely honest, he’s not just back for the wranglers and Stetsons. During those summers, Quinn was a friend-turned-young-love who Tate lost when life threw him a curveball and he cut all ties to his past; but all it takes is one glance at the raven-haired beauty he did his best to forget for him to realize just how much he’s been missing…

"Quinn, the hell-raisin’ badass is back, and Tate Montgomery can kiss my boots."

Kiss My Boots is the second standalone book in the Coming Home Series by Harper Sloan centred around hell-raisin' Quinn Davis and rich boy Tatum Montgomery.

I love a second chance romance, and a second chance romance with a bit of hate to love thrown in? My favourite!

After meeting Quinn in Lost Rider I was desperate to learn more about her. Growing up with two over protective brothers, no mother and an uncaring father turned her into a tomboy who just wanted her happily ever after. As a teenager Quinn met the boy she wanted to spend her life with, Tatum Montgomery. They planned a future through Rose Tinted glasses and for one reason or another the future never came.

Tate disappeared. Leaving Quinn with a broken heart she's been nursing and building walls around for 9 long years.

“If I take a chance—given that there’s even one to take—and let him close to that part of me again, somethin’ I haven’t let any man near since the last time I gave that to Tate, it could end in disaster, Leigh.” “Or . . . it could end in pure magic.” “It could be my destruction,” I debate. “Or it could be your salvation.” My salvation.

Tate makes a sudden appearance backing Quinn's life hoping they can pick up where they left off. But should they? And more importantly can they? Is there teenage love still as strong after 9 years?

I loved finally getting Quinn's story, I found her hilarious in Lost Rider. She's a little brash, a little insecure and a lot hilarious. Tate was almost Quinn's opposite. He was calm and collected and new what he wanted and exactly how to get it.

When you learn why Tate left Quinn 9 years ago, you can completely sympathise with him and it makes you love him a little bit more. He's genuine and a nice guy.

“Quinn, babe, you gave him Bertha’s engine,” she whispers. “You gave him the heart of a vehicle you’ve been painstakingly breathing life back into for longer than any of your other projects. You think I don’t know anythin’ about what you do with those trucks, but I pay attention and I know you wouldn’t have given Bertha’s heart to anyone you wouldn’t trust your own with.”

While I really enjoyed reading Kiss My Boots, I would've loved a little bit more angst and tension. And a little bit of angry sex. Every hate to love story needs a little angry sex and I think it would've added to Kiss My Boots just a little bit more when Quinn and Tate finally see each other again. Quinn was a firecracker and it would've added so much more to her character. Lost Rider had perfect sexual chemistry and tension and it fell a little flat in Kiss My Boots.

Kiss My Boots was a solid 3.5 star read and still a great second chance story and I really enjoyed going back to Pine Oak and seeing each of the characters again!
