REVIEW: He Will Be My Ruin By K.A Tucker

“This man was once my salvation. Now he will be my ruin”

On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation . . .

Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

“That must be what he does — he uncovers your secrets, your fears, your flaws — and he uses them against you. He did it to Celine. And now he’s doing it to me.”

He Will Be My Ruin was a story about love. Love between best friends and sisters, love between a mother and her daughters, love between a hero and a heroine. And love that was not reciprocated.

Not all love is good, some love is toxic, some love is suffocating and some love is never ending. He Will Be My Ruin has all types of love wrapped up with in its captivating pages.

I was immediately sucked into this story after reading the incredibly chilling prologue where Maggie gives you a brief look at what could be happening in the not so distant future. The story takes place over a month and begins with Maggie discussing the circumstances of her best friend, Celine’s suicide with the super who looks after the building that Celine lived in. And who also happened to be the person who found her.

Celine’s death is as far as the police are concerned an open and shut suicide case but Maggie doesn’t believe that her best friend, the sister she grew up with could ever do something like that to herself.

“This man was once my salvation. Now he will be my ruin”

As Maggie begins to go through all of Celine’s prized possessions she comes across some hard truths concerning the type of person Celine was. She also discovers clues to what she believes is a murder.

He Will Be My Ruin had me guessing up until about half way through where I was adamant I had figured out how it would end. Oh how wrong I was! The more I read the more I realised that I really had no idea where this story was going and who was to blame for Celine’s death.

This remarkable story was so well written it had me intrigued and engrossed till the very last word. I struggled to put it down and couldn’t stop back tracking at every turn to try and figure out ‘Who Dun It’. I highlighted important sentences every couple of pages, re-read paragraphs and full chapters so I could remember every detail that was mentioned.

This was my first K.A. Tucker book and she is one phenomenal writer. I was thoroughly impressed with how it kept you guessing at every point. It was equal parts suspenseful, fascinating and intense. And it most definitely will not be my last K.A. Tucker book, I can’t wait to sink my teeth into everything she’s ever written! I would highly recommend this book for anyone who needs something a little outside of the box. Something that you can’t put down, that’s full of suspense and keeps you guessing at every twist and turn.
